Highlights of India vs England 2nd Test Match, Day 1
India vs England 2nd Test Match day 1, saw unbroken 179 runs by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who helped India reach 336/6 at stumps.
Yashasvi Jaiswal batted well throughout the day, giving India a commanding lead in Visakhapatnam. On the first day of the second Test at the ACA-VDCA stadium, he stayed undefeated on 179 runs as India scored 336/6 at stumps. Compared to the previous Test, Jaiswal’s early innings performance was much more measured as he patiently waited for poor deliveries from opening partner and skipper Rohit Sharma. After winning the toss, Rohit decided to bat first. After becoming spinner Shoaib Bashir’s first Test wicket, Shubman Gill teamed up with Jaiswal and kept a close eye on the situation. But in due time, the former shifted gears and was ready for a major score until the brilliance of James Anderson brought him crashing down. Then, Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer put England in their place with a 90-run partnership; they kept India going till lunch and then held them steady for much of the second session. Tom Hartley scored 27 runs off of 59 balls, but Iyer was unable to exploit his start. Because of this, rookie Rajat Patidar was able to reach the crease. Rehan Ahmed dismissed him in the last session for 32.

While KL Rahul was out with an injury, Rohit Sharma said at the toss that Patidar would be starting for the first time. With Ravindra Jadeja out with an injury, pacer Mohammed Siraj resting, and Mukesh Kumar starting in his stead, India have opted to start Kuldeep Yadav instead of Washington Sundar, who is an all-rounder. Minutes before the toss, Patidar received his first Test cap, putting an end to any doubts about who would get the nod: Sarfaraz Khan or Patidar.
The second game of the five-match series commences today in Visakhapatnam, at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA stadium, after the conclusion of the first Test in four days. England shocked India in Hyderabad and has since inflicted a few more blows to the Indian team in the days after the conclusion of the first Test. But they have a history of overcoming early deficits in home series, including previous eras when they were unbeatable in such games. At their most recent Test match, which they hosted, England won the first match 3-1 after India had lost the first two.
But with the likes of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and the form-fit KL Rahul both out of the picture, India has a few problems on its hands. Since Jadeja has been so important to the team’s success in Test cricket with the ball, bat, and field in the past few years, the host nation may feel the brunt of the former’s departure. A potential opportunity for Kuldeep Yadav to be a part of the team has arisen. He made his debut in 2017, however since then he has missed 56 of India’s 64 Tests. He has shown remarkable patience in waiting for his few opportunities. On the other hand, he may finally get his wish in the second Test. One of the leading candidates to succeed Jadeja is Washington Sundar. Although Kuldeep has more experience, Sundar’s versatility makes him a more suitable candidate to replace Jadeja. Naturally, Virat Kohli is also absent.
The most intractable mystery of them all is now before us. Two young players fight it out for a spot in the starting lineup. The injury to Jadeja will let Sundar to step in, but nobody can say for sure who will replace Rahul. Sarfaraz Khan deserves a shot since he can spin the ball better than most Indian youths, but Rajat Patidar was already on the team, so he’s probably the one to go. They both expressed a desire to represent India, and one of those ambitions is going to be fulfilled today. Dhruv Jurel, the third youngster, is also likely to get some playing time after KS Bharat’s confirmation of participation at the press conference on the day of the match. He said that, despite losing in Hyderabad, the mood is mellow and that India is taking it easy.
England have selected three inexperienced frontline spinners—Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed, and Shoaib Bashir—following their 28-run victory in the first Test. With a knee injury, the most experienced player, Jack Leach, is out for the season. Joe Root will try to motivate the squad and take wickets in his stead if the youthful spin trio doesn’t live up to expectations. James Anderson, a seasoned pacer, has also returned to the team, replacing Mark Wood. Having participated in at least one Test match in each of his five previous trips to India, this will be his sixth. Truly a legend.
